Secretariat of the General Chapter
of the Congregation of Marian Fathers

Rome 2017

Bulletin No. 8 of the General Chapter – Rome 2017

The Audience with Pope Francis (on Saturday, February 18) made a great impression upon the participants of the General Chapter. This meeting - as well as the words which the Holy Father spoke to the Marians - will always remain a topic for reflection and conversation at the Chapter.

On February 20-22, the General Chapter continued its work upon the changes to the Constitutions and Directory, which it completed. The Chapter also accepted the declaration recognizing the “Oblatio” of St. Stanislaus Papczyński on December 11, 1670 as the beginning of the Congregation of Marian Fathers. This expresses the oldest conviction concerning the beginnings of the Marians, for on this day Father Founder offered himself to God and Mary and for the first time expresses his desire to found the Congregation of Marians. Other events were also mentioned in the declaration which are important for the foundation and renovation of the Marians:

-

September 8, 1671 - St. Stanislaus took the white habit in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary;

-

October 24, 1673 - Bishop Stanisław Jacek Święcicki approved the first house of the Congregation;

-

April 21, 1679 - Bishop Stefan Wierzbowski erected the Marians as an order of diocesan right;

-

November 24, 1699 - The Holy See approved the Marians as an order of pontifical right;

-

August 29, 1909 - Bl. George Matulaitis made his first vows, which is recognized as the date of the renovation of the Congregation of Marian Fathers.

On Thursday, February 23, time is foreseen for summarizing the chapter and proposals for the next chapter. The end of the General Chapter is planned for the afternoon.
